1990 BMW M325i

Our engaging all-rounder entertains with its repetoire of the best E30 attributes. Even mundane trips can become events.

A common thread running through much of the Keeper convoy is ample performance and handling prowess. Both traits are exemplified by the E30 M325i, which has been on collectors’ radars for many years now. It’s a complete package that deserves the attention.

The willing straight-six has endless character and, in ‘M’ car tradition, the steering and suspension were fine-tuned to reward the keenest drivers. It’s more user-friendly than the sublime E30 M3 (LHD, four-cylinder engine) and, crucially, much more affordable for not having the racing pedigree.

This example was registered new in New Zealand in 1990 and is distinguished by a colour-coded M Tech 2 aero kit and elaborate basket-weave alloys. An M-badged leather wheel and gearshift for the Getrag five-speeder are the key components in a velour-upholstered cabin that has well and truly stood the test of time.

So, too, has the driver appeal. Fast-forward 30 years and driving this car today illustrates why the M325i was the bees-knees during the late-80s height of E30 popularity.
