NEW TOYOTA HILUX SR5
Toyota’s ever-popular workhorse receives a welcome refresh and introduces hybrid tech to 4WD models.
We have a raft of utilities heading our way this season, and first dual-cab off the rank is the lightly facelifted 2WD variant of our perennial favourite, the indestructible Toyota Hilux. Our SR5 PreRunner makes use of the familiar 2755cc turbodiesel which is paired with a six-speed auto. It is worth noting that a hybrid version could well be destined for this model line shortly.
The facelift is mild. Up front, for example, a new grille has been applied to double-cab models and the eagle-eyed will spot the new centre console that introduces a valuable storage slot and wireless phone charger.
Toyota’s 48v mild hybrid system has initially made its way into the 4WD double-cab Hilux, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Beside the diesel engine sits a small, belt-driven motor generator that draws power from a 48v battery sited under the rear seat. It provides a 12kW/65Nm helping hand along with better throttle response and more linear acceleration, and makes hauling up to 3500kg that bit easier. Don’t expect any electric-only propulsion. You might, however, notice a lower 600rpm idle speed and smoother shifting through the auto box. When that motor generator is idle, you get by with the 2.8 diesel’s regular 150kW and 500Nm. Overall consumption drops from a claimed 9.1L/100km to about 8.5L.
