2007 PORSCHE 911 GT3 RS (3)

This special 911 is best described as a race car for the road, such is its purity of purpose.

The GT3 RS is not a particularly old car but it comes from an era when a manual gearbox and hydraulic steering were deemed essential components of the RS experience. They are central to the strength of the car-driver-tarmac connection it forges so well.

This ethos is supported by a restrained interior that’s free of distractions but thankfully not free of air-conditioning. It’s a driver-focused layout inside. The steering wheel and gearlever stand out for being wrapped in grey alcantara that’s grippy whether you’ve got bare palms or wear racing gloves. The seats are thinly padded racing cradles that clamp you in comfortably.

The clutch takes some getting used to. In fact nothing rams home the heavy-duty mechanical nature of the car better than the force required to depress the clutch to swap one cog for another. But so satisfying is each gearshift that it’s well worth the effort demanded of your leg muscles.
Start it up, engage a gear and it quickly gets a driver’s brain into gear, begging to be driven as the maker intended. And on the right road, it’s easy to get into the groove. Push harder and it responds more positively. The more thought and effort you apply, the greater the RS rewards.
